Looking to create a more peaceful feeling at home? Look no further than feng shui.

Windows and exterior doors play quite a large part in feng shui, so weโ€™re here to help guide you through using feng shui principles in your own home.

But first, letโ€™s talk about what feng shui is.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that aims to create the most harmonious space by balancing the energy, or chi, of a space. This is accomplished by strategically placing elements such as furniture and even doors and windows to allow the chi to flow freely and ward off any bad energy.

Even if you donโ€™t believe in chi or bad energy, there is no denying that some arrangements make for a more balanced and harmonious living area. As window and door experts, we have some tips for making your home feel more peaceful.

Feng Shui and Windows

When arranging furniture in a room with windows, follow these guidelines to ensure good feng shui:

  • Avoid placing your bed under a window as this can lead you to feel less secure while sleeping. According to feng shui, your bed should never be placed under a window to avoid those feelings of insecurity and even danger. If your bed must be placed under a window, choose a large, solid headboard and heavy curtains to reinforce the feeling of safety and security.
  • Do not put furniture back to a window. Similar to your bed, placing the back of your couch or chairs to a window can create a feeling of vulnerability.
  • If you have a window with a particularly nice view, place a window directly opposite the window to essentially double the view.
  • Avoid windows that are too big for the space, or too many windows, as this can create the feeling of a lack of privacy. Even with curtains, blinds, or other window coverings, too many windows in one room can make you feel vulnerable.
  • Keep your windows clean and in good condition. They should open and close properly and cracks or broken screens should be fixed immediately. In addition to being a security risk, feng shui dictates that broken or dirty windows cloud your view of the outside world, leading you to have trouble seeing things as they are. Not to mention that dirty or broken windows bring down your curb appeal!

Exterior Doors and Feng Shui

Make your home more harmonious with these feng shui-inspired exterior door rules:

  • Make sure that your entry door swings inward. A door that wings out requires guests to step backward before entering. An inward-swinging door is more welcoming.
  • Create a welcoming entryway with flowers along the path leading up to your front door.
  • Keep your entryway uncluttered both inside and out. According to feng shui, a cluttered entryway keeps the good energy from flowing freely into your home. In addition, clutter around your entry door creates stress every time you see it.
  • Keep your front door clean and well-maintained. A dirty or broken front door is a security risk and creates a bad first impression and may make you feel stressed.
  • Choose your front door color carefully. Here is everything you need to know about feng shui and the color of your front door.

Feng Shui Front Door Colors

In feng shui, there are two ways to choose your front door color: based on the direction your front door faces and what you are trying to attract. Here are colors based on the direction your door faces:

  • South: Red, pink or burgundy
  • Southwest: Yellow or brown
  • West and Northwest: White, copper, or gold
  • North: Black or a shade of blue
  • Northeast: Yellow or brown
  • East and Southeast: A shade of green

Not sure which direction your door faces? You can choose your front door color based on what youโ€™d like to attract:

  • Red: Warmth and passion
  • Black: Positive energy
  • Brown: Support and connection, especially to the earth
  • Yellow: Stability
  • Green: Growth and new opportunities
  • White: Joy
  • Blue: Knowledge

As always, the best front door color is the one that you love and that complements your home!
